Rascal Flatts just kicked off their Flatts Fest summer tour in Bristow, Va., on Saturday, and the guys have some special guests along for the ride, including Sara Evans, Justin Moore and Easton Corbin. Following their video shoot for their latest single, “Easy,” with British pop star, Natasha Bedingfield, the guys loaded up and headed south to rehearse their show.
“What we do is we sit around in a circle with our band,” explains the Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus. “We go in there with kind of, I guess, a preliminary list of songs we want to do. We sit there
and work through the arrangements with the band for a few days, get everything semi-worked out, and then we take the full set, full production, lights and everything and go down to Tupelo [Miss.], for about a week and rehearse the show.”
Their label mate, Justin Moore, has said he’s looking forward to playing golf with the guys when they’re not playing shows. What he may not realize is he may be doing more than just putting around; the Flatts have him actually working.
“He’s a great caddy. I mean, he’s the greenhorn out there, and that’s what opening acts have to do for Joe Don. It’s a prerequisite,” says lead singer Gary LeVox. “We put it in real fine writing at the bottom of the contract when he signed it. It said “JD caddy” in there and Justin signed it. Welcome to a big headlining tour. It’s just part of it. And Justin will be available at any golf course for autographs while Joe Don’s golfing.”
All kidding aside, they’re looking forward to having the “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” singer on the road with them, as is Justin, because he feels the exposure will open up a whole new audience for him. “I don’t think our music could be any more opposite than Rascal Flatts, me and those guys. But that’s one reason why I’m looking so much forward to it,” explains the Arkansas native. “I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun. It’s going to be challenging for us a little bit. And I think we’re going to be playing in front of a fan base that we haven’t played in front of us before, which gives you the opportunity to grow your fan base.”
