CountryMusicRocks: Your debut self-titled album will be released on April 5th, give us some background on what fans can expect on this cd?
Craig Campbell: Each song is a short story into who I am. I wrote 9 out of 11 so those in particular are small windows into my character and values. There are family songs, songs about life, songs about fishing, and even a few drinking songs. It is also a very traditional country record.
CMR: Your getting ready to hit the road on the 2nd Annual Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown Tour 2011. What are you looking forward to most on this tour?
CC: I get to go on tour with WILLIE NELSON!! Enough said. I am also looking forward to hanging out with my buddies and playing some good country music. Being on the road with Randy Houser, Lee Brice, and Jamey Johnson, that is a recipe for a fun summer tour.
CMR: Being such a family guy, how is being on tour going to affect your family life?
CC: I am going to miss my girls and I hope they miss me. We are going to stay in touch a much as possible through Skype and other means of communication. I also expect them to come out on the road with me a few times throughout the next year.
CMR: Your hit single “Family Man” has captivated the hearts of families all across the nation, when you wrote & recorded this song, did you imagine (even if just for a moment) that it was going to resonate so deeply & become such a fan-favorite on country radio?
CC: I never thought the song would do the things it is doing. I wrote the song form personal experience. I didn’t realize I am just like a bunch of people in this world. Same problems looking for the same hope.
CMR: What is one value that you hope to instill in your daughters at their young age now that they will take with them throughout life and even one day instill in their children?
CC: I want them to be respectful. My parents made me say “thank you” and “yes ma’am”. I don’t hear kids say these things anymore.
CMR: You recently surprised a family with quintuplets in Ohio who posted a YouTube video about the birth of their pre-mature babies & the hardships they had to endure and they set the video to your hit song “Family Man”. What was that evening like for you?
CC: It was something I was looking forward to since I first heard about the Spicocci Family. When I heard about what Vince and Amie had been through, I felt like I needed to do something for these amazing people. The night we met was incredible. By the time it was over, we were all crying and hugging. It was awesome.
CMR: Earlier this year, you performed your final weekly performance at The Stage on Broadway. What was that final performance like for you, knowing you were not going to be back on stage there the next week on a regular basis?
CC: It was a little bitter sweet for me. I loved playing there and was going to miss it a bunch but the fact that it was my last regularly scheduled show was the beginning of a new chapter in my life, one that I had been working on for a long time.
CMR: You wrote 9 out of the 11 songs on your upcoming release, was it difficult to choose which songs of yours to put on your debut album?
CC: It wasn’t difficult at all. My producer, Keith Stegall, and I went through the songs I had and picked each song because they told the “Craig Campbell” story the best.
CMR: You are not only an amazing singer but also a very talented songwriter. If you could pen a song with any artist, who would you choose & why?
CC: I would love to write with Anthony Smith. His way with words is cool and weird at the same time. I would love to see what we came up with.
CMR: You recently got to check out your new tour bus, what is one of your favorite feature or features that you will enjoy the most?
CC: It has a TV on each wall in the front lounge. This is cool because you can always see it no matter what side you’re on. Otherwise, you are breaking your neck trying to turn and look at a TV behind you.
CMR: What are you plans to celebrate the release of your New Album on April 5th?
CC: I am going to go buy my album in a store with the same clothes I have on in the front of the album itself and film it. Then my band and me are going to go have a steak dinner!
