Chesney, who wore Holloway’s jersey number when he played high school football, idolized the University of Tennessee quarterback and was thrilled to produce the documentary. “Condredge has meant so much to so many and is a very important figure in my life and to the history of College Football,” says Chesney. “ I’m excited, with the help of Shaun Silva, to tell his story, to show his journey, and to help show the world just how influential he was to how the game is played today and how many doors he opened for so many athletes that have followed in his footsteps,” Chesney continued. Holloway was the first African-American to start at Quarterback in the Southeastern Conference.
Year of The Quarterback will delve into the topic to find a deeper understanding of one of sports’ most high-profile positions. We’ll examine the leadership qualities, mental toughness, as well as issues of race and recruitment from the “blue chip” high school recruit, to the Heisman hopeful, to the NFL legend. It will tell the story of the quarterback both on and off the field, presented across a range of content formats including documentaries, vignettes and series, and will be integrated into ESPN’s football studio shows over the year: NFL Countdown, NFL Live, College GameDay, college football bowl coverage as well as BCS and Super Bowl programming, and NFL Combine and Draft coverage.
“The quarterback is a star-powered position played by many, but excelled by few, and we will dig down to examine why people are so fascinated with this elite group of athletes,” said Joan Lynch, vice president and executive producer, ESPN content development. “ESPN will create and produce extensive content throughout the year to establish 2011 as the ‘Year of the Quarterback’ – among fans, athletes and across the sports spectrum.”
The New Year finds Chesney’s single “Somewhere With You,” at Number four on the charts and is the second single from his critically acclaimed Hemingway’s Whiskey album. The four-time CMA and four-time ACM Entertainer of the Year is set to begin rehearsals for his “Goin’ Coastal” Tour which includes ten stadium shows, and kicks off in March.
