Toby Keith is the next superstar to take the stage when an all-new episode of CMT’s INVITATION ONLY premieres this Friday, October 8th at 10:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., ET/PT. In this one-hour special, Keith performs songs from his new album which is in stores now, including the title track “Bullets In the Gun”, “Somewhere Else” and his latest single “Trailerhood”. He also performs fan favorites including “I Love This Bar”, “Good As I Once Was” and more. Keith opens up during a question and answer session with the audience:
Toby on why he chose the title “Bullets In the Gun” for his new album:
“I HAVEN’T DONE A NEO-WESTERN THING, MODERN DAY, SINCE ‘SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY’ 15 YEARS AGO. WE JUST SAT DOWN, STARTED WRITING THIS SONG — INSTEAD OF THE GUY RIDING A HORSE, WE RIDE OUR MOTORCYCLES A LOT. SO I SAID, MAKE HIM RIDE A MOTORCYCLE AND LET’S GO FLY. WE WENT IN TO CUT IT, AND IT WAS JUST THE PROPER THING TO CALL THIS ALBUM. IT’S LIKE, ‘BLUFF’S OVER, CARDS ARE ON THE TABLE, BULLET’S IN THE GUN. WHO’S PLAYING, ALRIGHT?’ YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?”
Toby on why he will NOT be running for public office:
“I HATE POLITICS. POLITICS SUCK. BUT THERE’S A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF GOOD AND BAD ON BOTH SIDES, BUT I COULD NEVER BE A POLITICIAN BECA– USE THEY LIE TOO MUCH. I WOULDN’T LIKE THE POLITICAL SIDE OF HAVING TO HAVE SOMEBODY TO TELL ME A LIE AND LIE TO ME, AND THEN ME HAVE TO STILL CAMPAIGN FOR THEM OR BE THEIR FRIEND OR BE AGENDA DRIVEN. I DON’T THINK THAT HAS ANY PLACE IN MY LIFE, EVER. I GET ASKED THAT QUESTION ALL THE TIME, BUT GUESS WHAT? I GOT A GREAT NIGHT GIG.”
Toby on his musical influences and songwriters:
“IF YOU WOULD GO BACK TO THE CASSETTE TAPE DAYS, THERE WERE VERY FEW STYLISTS IN MY BOXES THAT I HAD IN MY TRUCK. I JUST ALWAYS GRAVITATED TO MERLE HAGGARD AND WILLIE NELSON AND CHARLIE DANIELS AND BOB SEGER AND BILLY JOEL AND ELTON JOHN AND THE EAGLES. PEOPLE THAT DON’T WRITE THEIR OWN STUFF NEVER GRAB ME. THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT SEPARATED THEM FROM THE OTHER ACTS THAT MADE ME WANT TO GO. YOU KNOW, I LOVE IF SOMEBODY CAN KILL A BUNCH OF SONGS AND THEY’RE STYLISTS AND THEY MAKE THAT SONG THEIRS, BUT THERE’S VERY FEW PEOPLE THAT CAN DO THAT. A BIG GOAL OF MINE IS TO GET TO 100 MILLION SPINS AS A SONGWRITER, AND I’M AT 70.”
Toby on who instilled his American pride:
“MY FATHER WAS A SOLDIER, AND HE CAME BACK WITH ONE LESS EYE THAN HE HAD. HE JUST INSTILLED INTO HIS KIDS A RESPECT THAT’S NON-POLITICAL. I KNOW WHERE I GET CAST, AND I’M COOL WITH THAT. IF THEY WANNA BASH ME THAT WAY I’M COOL WITH IT. BUT HE INSTILLED IN HIS KIDS THE WANT TO SUPPORT PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO PUT ON THE LINE AND DIE FOR YOU SO YOU CAN GO TO SCHOOL, SO YOU CAN TAKE EVERYTHING FOR GRANTED AROUND US. HE JUST MADE US UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WAS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF RESPECT THAT HE WAS GONNA COMMAND OUT OF HIS, AND DEMAND OUT OF HIS CHILDREN WHEN IT CAME TO DEALING WITH OUR MILITARY, AND I’VE NEVER, I MEAN, THAT’S THE ONLY WAY I WAS RAISED.”
